Speaker A:From the energy efficient H vac systems to cutting edge water solutions, we'll explore how to keep your home comfortable, cost effective and be eco friendly.
Speaker A:So buckle up and get ready for an inside look at the future of home climate control and plumbing.
Speaker A:This is Boxcar Universe.
Speaker B:Since the dawn of time, mankind has searched for ways to shelter themselves from the elements.
Speaker B:Over the centuries, these shelters have evolved from bamboo huts to concrete towers.
Speaker B:The last few years, there's been a push to save the planet.
Speaker B:Are you ready to embark on a more sustainable lifestyle?
Speaker B:Look no further.
Speaker B:You're about to enter the adventures of container home living.
Speaker B:And now, contractor, radiator and TV personality and your host for Boxcar Universe, Steve Dubel.
Speaker A:Hi, I'm Steve Dubell, host of Boxcar Universe.
Speaker A:And here's what's coming up on this week's edition of Boxcar Universe.
Speaker A:We're talking with the good people from Semper Fi heating, cooling and plumbing.
Speaker A:And if you are in Arizona or Nevada and need these services, Semper Fi is the company to call.
Speaker A:Remember, putting off that AC spring tune up is not something that you want to do.
Speaker A:You need to make sure that you call and get that unit checked out because the last thing you want to do is be in July or August when the temperatures are soaring and your AC goes out.
Speaker A:So there is so much more to do.
Speaker A:And obviously it's wintertime heating.
Speaker A:We're still in the heating mode with some of our parts people around the country.
Speaker A:And, and one thing that we always have, we always have plumbing issues.
Speaker A:Plumbing issues always seem to be something that, that go bad either under slab leaks, plumbing leaks, hot water heaters going out, water damage, unexpected.
Speaker A:Lord knows, as a contractor, I've done a lot of different home and restoration work from water damage.
Speaker A:But obviously prevention is one of the things that you need to make sure that you do just for peace of mind and as well as a money saver because we don't want to spend needless money on repairs that we could have possibly prevented.
Speaker A:But we have two great people from Semper Fi in the house with us today.
Speaker A:Melissa Argamanis is with us.
Speaker A:She is the marketing guru, guru of Semper Fi as well as Bill Kleiser.
Speaker A:He is the sales manager from Semper Fi.
Speaker A:And guys, welcome to Boxcar Universe.
Speaker A:Great to have you on the show today.
Speaker C:Appreciate it.
Speaker D:Thank you.
Speaker D:We're excited to be here.
Speaker A:Great.
Speaker A:You know, and as we are In Arizona, you know, we're.
Speaker A:We.
Speaker A:We're talking.
Speaker A:It's getting warm, and we're only in, like, the end of February.
Speaker A:Well, some of our friends out there listening are still in cold temperatures.
Speaker A:I think I saw some places with snow in upper New York State and near the Great Lakes the other day.
Speaker A:So it's like, I think they need to move soon.
Speaker A:I think, you know, I grew up in the Northeast and lived in Chicago for a while.
Speaker A:And, you know, maybe it is something that's very true.
Speaker A:You know, if you stay here long enough in Arizona, your blood thins out.
Speaker A:Is that.
Speaker A:Does that happen with you guys or.
Speaker A:What do you think?
Speaker C:Oh, it's 100% fact.
Speaker C:I can't handle the cold.
Speaker A:I know.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:Yeah, it gets to be it.
Speaker A:You know, you think about it.
Speaker A:I mean, I remember there were.
Speaker A:There were times when I lived in Illinois, and it was two years in a row, almost to the exact same weekend in February.
Speaker A:Probably right about now, it was 80 degrees below wind chill.
Speaker A:And some people can't even imagine that if they've lived in a more temperate part of the country.
Speaker A:But it's like.
Speaker A:And you can't.
Speaker A:If your cars are outside, you've got to take the battery in at night.
Speaker A:You can't leave it outside.
Speaker A:And I know when I was married in Chicago, I told my wife at the time, I'm going to take the batteries out of the car and bring them upstairs.
Speaker A:And she's like, why?
Speaker A:Well, because tomorrow morning when we're out, after they've sat all night, I said, we have to use both batteries to start each car.
Speaker A:And she said after we did that for like a year and a half, two years, she said, I'm moving back to Arizona.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:I don't blame her.
Speaker A:I am done with this cold weather.
Speaker D:No snow or rain over here.
Speaker A:Yeah, we know.
Speaker A:It's just, you know, we know in a lot of ways other than heat, we get spoiled living in Arizona.
Speaker A:There's just no two ways about it.
Speaker A:But, Melissa, tell us a little bit about Semper Fi.
Speaker A:And, you know, you guys got a tremendous reach around the Valley, and I'm really interested on how you guys grew into Nevada.
Speaker D:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker D: any out of his garage back in: Speaker D:And, you know, he has just been able to go around the community and really get the name out there.
Speaker D:And it's been almost two years now that we've expanded into Las Vegas.
Speaker D:And, you know, we're veteran owned and operated and we do service all over the Phoenix Valley.
Speaker D:And it's.
Speaker D:We've just grew so quickly.
Speaker A:Now, when he started the company, did he just start with like heating and air conditioning or did he, you know, add the plumbing aspect into it as well, or did that come later?
Speaker D:So the plumbing did come on later.
Speaker D:It was specifically for heating and cooling at first.
Speaker D:And, you know, when we were in the Superstition Mall for quite some time and then we finally moved into our brand new home about a year and a half ago.
Speaker D:So.
Speaker D:And that's been.
Speaker D:We're like right on the other side of the intersection by the Superstition Mall.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:Out in the Far East Valley.
Speaker D:Yes, yes, Far East Valley.
Speaker A:But no, I mean, you guys have some great views out in that part of the valley.
Speaker A:It's really nice.
Speaker A:And it's like, I think it's so good to have to see mountains.
Speaker A:I think that adds to the beauty of the city.
Speaker A:That's.
Speaker A:When I lived in Illinois, in Chicago, seeing everything was so flat.
Speaker A:There was no.
Speaker A:It was lacking.
Speaker A:I don't know, to me it just lacked something.
Speaker A:But there's so many good things to see here when you live in a lot of different parts of the valley.
Speaker A:But that's really a great story.
Speaker A:He started out of his garage, and so many great companies start small just from an idea like that, and you just never know where it's going to go.
Speaker A:But obviously what he started, there must have been a reason that he started.
Speaker A:And it grew so fast.
Speaker A:As fast as it did.
Speaker A: Because, what,: Speaker A:I mean, so he must be doing something right.
Speaker D:Yes, he laughs about it because, you know, when he transitioned out of the military, he didn't know what he wanted to do.
Speaker D:And he told me that he saw a commercial one day about restoration and the RSI school because he grew up in.
Speaker A:I remember that commercial.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:And he graduated from Mesa, so I know Mesa holds a special place in his heart.
Speaker D:But when he saw that commercial, he was like, I'm just gonna.
Speaker D:I'm gonna dive into H Vac.
Speaker D:And he went to RSI and he, you know, he graduated with multiple degrees there.
Speaker D:And that's.
Speaker D:He just jumped right in.
Speaker A:That's great.
Speaker A:I mean, there are so, so many, you know, H Vac companies around the valley.
Speaker A:And some of them, it's hard to know.
Speaker A:Much like contractors, you just don't know which is a good one, which is a bad one.
Speaker A:That's why I think referrals are always so important from, you know, from.
Speaker A:From.
Speaker A:Especially from homeowners.
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker A:But, Bill, tell us a little bit about your.
Speaker A:Your, you know, part of the company.
Speaker C:Well, actually, Jesse and I grew up in Mesa together since fourth grade.
Speaker C:Went to junior high, high school together.
Speaker C:We both joined the Marine Corps when we graduated.
Speaker C:I went infantry.
Speaker C:He went motor T driving trucks.
Speaker C:And somehow he actually became our fuel driver in our unit.
Speaker C:So he ended up getting stationed together.
Speaker A:Oh, that was good.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker C:Deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom.
Speaker C:And then, yeah, when we both got out, I remember Jesse was living in a little studio, you know, townhouse type thing.
Speaker C:I mean, just a small, small, small house.
Speaker C:And would have to take the bus to go to rsi.
Speaker C:That's how motivated he was to get into H Vac.
Speaker C:And then eventually, you know, he.
Speaker C:When he did start this company up out of his garage, one thing that he made it a point was that we were going to take care of the customer first.
Speaker C:So he focused on that more than the actual growth of it.
Speaker C:Where when you see a lot of these newer H Vac companies that are in, just starting out, they'll worry about growing so much that they forget about the customers that they just serviced.
Speaker C:Where again, I know when it was literally just me and him, and we had a couple other guys helping us out out of his garage.
Speaker C:When there was an issue, we would all stop what we were doing and we would go and take care of that customer and get it fixed immediately.
Speaker C:And word got out, we used to rent a little booth at a swap meet, and we would gain a customer.
Speaker C:We'd go out and maintenance their system or replace their system or fix their system.
Speaker C:And it was just a couple of guys doing it.
Speaker C:And we eventually rented a office out of a tow yard.
Speaker C:When we moved out of his house first and bought used furniture, our first office desk had termites in it.
Speaker A:Oh, no.
Speaker C:And we had a little, you know, fake plant in the corner that we got.
Speaker C:And we were like, we made it, man.
Speaker C:We got it.
Speaker A:We got it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:And, you know, our focus was on that customer service and just relentless service and making sure that with the Semper Fi name, I mean, that is a Marine Corps motto, Latin phrase, Semper Fi delis, always faithful.
Speaker C:And that's exactly what we are out there to the H Vac industry and with our customers.
Speaker C:And so once that word got out, we're out there honoring that we just blew up.
Speaker C:I mean, like you said, word of mouth referrals.
Speaker C:It's no joke.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's so good.
Speaker A:And you know the one other thing that, you know, when you had your first office and you got that desk full of termites, you should have added pest control.
Speaker A:Pest control into it.
Speaker A:And you would have been the only H Vac plumbing company that had pest control division.
Speaker A:Maybe we could still add that.
Speaker A:I think that's a good.
Speaker A:I think we should talk to him about that.
Speaker A:That's a good idea.
Speaker A:Talk to Jesse about that.
Speaker C:I think we ended up working on the air conditioner that.
Speaker C:From the office that we rented for a little discount on rent, too.
Speaker A:Don't kid yourself.
Speaker A:I know when we did some remodeling a few years ago, we were over in.
Speaker A:In Scottsdale and we were doing a patio restoration.
Speaker A:And we walked around this one corner and right there, curled up right in behind this pole because it was extremely hot out.
Speaker A:They were in the shade was this huge snake.
Speaker A:And I saw another.
Speaker A:Another tech told me a story that he was getting ready to do some H Vac work.
Speaker A:Sure enough, the unit was in a.
Speaker A:Like a concealed corner with just enough space for ventilation.
Speaker A:There was a snake right behind it.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:So, yeah, I've experienced a few snakes under mobile homes and behind condensers and.
Speaker A:Yeah, don't.
Speaker C:It's Arizona.
Speaker A:Those crawl spaces underneath those mobile homes are just like.
Speaker A:You never know what you're going to run into.
Speaker C:No, you don't.
Speaker A:It's amazing.
Speaker C:You got dead bodies, treasure chests, and.
Speaker A:I still haven't been doing remodeling.
Speaker A:I still haven't found any money.
Speaker C:I know.
Speaker A:Yeah, Keep looking for money or gold bars or something.
Speaker A:All I found, I found this old Coke bottles.
Speaker A:That's about it.
Speaker C: und underneath one was like a: Speaker C: It was: Speaker C: So it had to be a: Speaker C:And it was still in the box.
Speaker C:It was a metal, you know, like an igloo cooler.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker C:It was a Coleman brand, metal, green.
Speaker C:The inside of it.
Speaker C:When I took the box out and opened it up, all the little compartments were still in the plastic.
Speaker C:It was never open.
Speaker A:Oh, my God.
Speaker C:From the 70s.
Speaker C:And I tried it off for the customer.
Speaker C:I was.
Speaker C:I'll give you 500 bucks for this thing right now.
Speaker A:Something that sounds like something on Marketplace.
Speaker A:It was so awesome.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:He wouldn't give it up after he saw that.
Speaker A:He didn't even know it was under there.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:But.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Well, you got to be honest, you know, I find something, you know, if you don't want it, I'll take it.
Speaker A:But.
Speaker A:But you got to give the homeowner his choice.
Speaker A:It's on his property.
Speaker C:It is his.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:Darn, that was a great find.
Speaker C:Oh, it was so cool.
Speaker A:My God, it's amazing.
Speaker A:All right, we're going to take a short break.
Speaker A:When we come back, we're going to get into some of the particulars about, you know, heating, air conditioning and plumbing.
Speaker A:Obviously, some of the things you need to be aware of.
Speaker A:Some of those wonderful FAQs that people come out like, well, you know, and I hear it about all the time.
Speaker A:I says, how did, when was the last time you changed your filter?
Speaker A:And I never get an answer, like, never, what filter?
Speaker A:And it's like, oh, my God, what filter?
Speaker A:You know, what filter?
Speaker A:I mean, you know, there's so many things, obviously, like everything else you need to take care of your, your home and it requires a little bit of maintenance and some know how.
Speaker A:And that's what we're going to be able to help you with with your home.
Speaker A:But we're going to take a break and when we come back, we're going to have more from Melissa and Bill.

Speaker A: -: Speaker A:so what's in your attic?
Speaker A:All right, we are back, and you're listening to boxcar universe.
Speaker A:And today we're talking about your heating and cooling and plumbing that you need to be aware of in your home.
Speaker A:Castle or container home, depending on where you live.
Speaker A:Cabin.
Speaker A:These are things that you need to be aware of.
Speaker A:And, you know, being a contractor for many, many years there, I've seen a lot of different issues that need to be taken care of from a maintenance standpoint.
Speaker A:Because years ago, you know, Bill, much like Jesse, had started the company back out of his garage.
Speaker A:I mean, when I moved here in 89, I found that there were so many homeowners out there who were trying to do things that they really had no business attempting.
Speaker C:Sure.
Speaker A:It's not just because they just didn't have the skills.
Speaker A:And that's not saying that that's bad.
Speaker A:It's just a question of that they needed to make sure that to make the right decision, either if you have the skills, by all means try it.
Speaker A:If you don't be smart, call a professional.
Speaker A:And I think I saw some work that was being done from a repair and a remodeling standpoint that I said I need to be able to go start my own business because that's what inspired me to break out on my own and start just in the beginnings of a handyman.
Speaker A:And much like, you know, the network groups Melissa, that you're in, I had started and I grew my business primarily, you know, one homeowner at a time.
Speaker A:A lot of times I used to think it's like one realtor at a time because realtors have know a lot of homeowners and they are a good source of leads.
Speaker A:But you see things that people neglect in their homes throughout the years.
Speaker A:One thing like we were talking about during the break, Bill, is, you know, water heaters, water people just, you know, they just, they turn the tap on, they expect to be hot, they expect it to be cold, and they expect it to be the pressure to be good.
Speaker A:And a lot of times things happen over the course of time.
Speaker A:And the only thing analogy that I could use for, like lack of pressure is when hot water heaters haven't been drained over time.
Speaker A:To get all the, we'll call it the gunk, this old salt sediment and everything else and your pressure gets affected and you know, until much like anything else, you know, when you don't pay any attention to it unless something goes wrong.
Speaker A:Sure, yeah.
Speaker C:A lot of people don't realize that inside a water heater is an anode rod and it's just a weaker metal than the outside or, or actually the lining of the inside of the water heater so that that stuff gets attacked and you're not damaging the inside of the water heater itself.
Speaker C:So it's important every so often to drain that, flush it, make sure that you're checking that ano rod and see if you need to have it replaced, which can extend the life of the water heater.
Speaker C:And sometimes when you're doing those drains and flushes, you realize that the inside of that water heater is actually rusting, which at that point you know you're gonna experience a failure.
Speaker A:Yeah, I mean, I know a lot of times and there's no rhyme or reason.
Speaker A:Like I get questions.
Speaker A:Well, how long should a hot water heater last?
Speaker A:Well, you know, when is it gonna rain again?
Speaker A:That's the same kind of question.
Speaker A:You give the same answer.
Speaker A:You just don't know.
Speaker A:Because the inside of the hot water heater could be experiencing more sediment and water issues, more minerals than other parts of the valley.
Speaker A:And that's just what it is about hard water.
Speaker A:I remember when I moved here, the first thing I noticed is I needed to get a water softener because I tried to drink a cup of coffee with the water that was untreated.
Speaker A:It was like drinking stone.
Speaker A:Oh, it was so hard.
Speaker A:It was amazing.
Speaker C:Yeah, especially if you're not from here.
Speaker A:Right, exactly, exactly.
Speaker A:It was like, oh, we need to do something here.
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker A:You know, but then you, I mean that's a whole other show.
Speaker A:Which water softer do you get?
Speaker A:I mean there's just so many of them.
Speaker A:Like, like there's so many H Vac companies in the valley.
Speaker C:Well, and we can, we can always help out with the water softener and reverse osmosis tankless water heaters as well.
Speaker C:But you know, as far as the length of a water heater and how long it's going to last.
Speaker C:It also depends on the quality of water heater that you've gotten, the maintenance that you've done on it.
Speaker C:If you haven't done any and you have a builder grade water heater, it probably isn't going to last as long as compared to a well Maintained American made, Bradford White, you know, water heater that has a thicker porcelain lining and all metal fittings.
Speaker C:And you know that's going to, that's going to give you a few more years compared to some of the cheaper ones that they put in with the new houses.
Speaker A:True, true.
Speaker A:I mean, and that's just, it's just so important again, making the right choice and again being educated and that's all we wanted to do when we started doing the show years ago, to be able to give back to homeowners, to know to make the right decision.
Speaker A:I think that's so important.
Speaker A:But again, like you said, the guts of the hot water heater kind of like it's almost the same like the guts of your heat pump for your H Vac system in the house.
Speaker A:You know, diodes go bad, things go bad, people don't understand.
Speaker A:It's not just the coolant that, that could be leaking out over time that you need to get checked.
Speaker A:But obviously I was told this, something I learned a long time ago because you know, back east originally, you know, you had, you had air conditioning units, you had furnaces.
Speaker A:There was no such thing when I grew up as a heat pump.
Speaker C:Sure.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:So the people decided that, you know, they, they said, well, heat pumps are like, you know, when you talk about when do I get them serviced and think about going down I10 at maybe 80, we'll say 75.
Speaker A:We don't want, we don't want to speed.
Speaker A:Let's go down the road 75 miles an hour and then you throw your car into reverse.
Speaker A:And that's exactly what happens with your, with your, your H Vac unit when you switch from spring from spring to winter because it just, it works basically in reverse and you need to be able to go back and have a reputable company like separate to be able to let you know if it's good shape, what you need.
Speaker A:Maybe you need something, you know, a part that's wearing out changed and you need to be able to do that because you know, it does get, it doesn't get as cold as I said in Chicago that we experienced back in the day, but it gets down into, you know, around freezing on an average during the wintertime.
Speaker A:And for us thin blooded people, it gets cold.
Speaker C:Oh, it's cold enough to need heat, that's for sure.
Speaker A:Definitely cold enough to need heat.
Speaker A:And that's another thing.
Speaker A:So I think it's important that people go out and get their units taken care of.
Speaker A:And again, there are a lot of different, not just H VAC companies.
Speaker A:But there are a lot of different manufacturers of H VAC units.
Speaker A:And I know a lot of companies have preferred manufacturers.
Speaker A:Do you guys have a preferred manufacturer that you guys like to use or are there several ones that you prefer like to use?
Speaker C:Well, another great thing about when Jesse had started this company, he didn't want to be loyal to a distributor or loyal to a manufacturer.
Speaker C:He wanted to be loyal to his customers.
Speaker C:And so you will see that 99% of the H Vac companies out here will only offer one brand of air conditioning.
Speaker C:And it's for all different seer ratings or energy efficiency ratings and all different tonnages.
Speaker C:It's just one brand.
Speaker C:What we've done is the research out in the field and we've talked to technicians out there.
Speaker C:We've experience firsthand on which units work the best in the valley.
Speaker C:And so for our entry level systems, we're going to have that Midea system that's, you know, the 14.3 seer, our mid level system that, you know, you actually qualify for the SRP rebates, you're going to get a two stage compressor.
Speaker C:Johnson Controls, who owns York, they actually are the best mid range system that's out there.
Speaker C:And when you get into those really high efficient systems, those inverter systems, the variable systems allied by Lennox is the best one on the market.
Speaker C:And so you'll see that we offer the best brand for the different options compared to what the customer wants.
Speaker C:Not just being loyal to say for example, Trane.
Speaker C:Because a lot of people know Trane.
Speaker C:Trane's not what they were back in the day.
Speaker C:We're actually Trane certified.
Speaker C:We just don't feel that it's the best for this environment and for our customers.
Speaker C:So we go with what is best for them and what's going to make it so we don't have to do any callbacks.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Yeah, I mean, you know, that, that, that could become a costly issue.
Speaker A:Not to mention that, you know, you want to put a new unit in and be able to trust that everything was done properly and then you, you won't get any callbacks except for service.
Speaker C:Yeah, exactly.
Speaker C:And you know, I loved your analogy about driving down the freeway.
Speaker C:You know, you can think of your annual maintenance as your, your H Vac system doesn't have a check engine light.
Speaker C:You know, so when something's wrong with your car, your check engine light comes on, you know something's going on with your H vac system.
Speaker C:Let us be your check engine light and just do a Check over on everything and check your amp draws, check your pressures.
Speaker C:Make sure that you do preventative maintenance to avoid a breakdown anytime, sometime in the near future.
Speaker A:You know, you brought up a good point and it's great that the analogies match, but here's you brought up a very.
Speaker A:Another good point.
Speaker A:Thinking about, you know, the technology that has grown in the way people build homes.
Speaker A:Not just container homes, but regular traditional homes.
Speaker A:You know, they have the home run box where all.
Speaker A:Everything, the elect inside your home for, for everything is in one location for communications and a lot of the other.
Speaker A:The things that conveniences that you have in your home.
Speaker A:Wouldn't it be great if they could incorporate a check engine light on that home run box?
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Wouldn't that be great?
Speaker C:Yeah, like something's going on with your house.
Speaker A:Yeah, something's wrong, you know, because sometimes people don't.
Speaker A:And you know, they, you can't get everybody to act on something when something goes bad.
Speaker A:I remember seeing somebody online that actually had a check engine light on their car and they just didn't want to deal with it.
Speaker A:So they had to go through and get, you know, go through emissions to get it tested.
Speaker A:It must have been an emission issue.
Speaker A:So check engine lights on.
Speaker A:So you know what they did?
Speaker A:They took a piece of black electrical tape and put it over the dashboard to cover up the check engine light, hoping that the inspector wouldn't see the tape.
Speaker A:And he got away with it.
Speaker C:Oh, wow.
Speaker A:Yeah, he got away with it.
Speaker A:So I was, it was pretty.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:It's only stupid if it doesn't work, right?
Speaker A:Exactly.
Speaker A:Right, yeah.
Speaker A:And if it worked, it was a brilliant thing, you know.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Until you break down on the road.
Speaker C:Well, yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I mean, if you know a bad decision.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:If you know what.
Speaker A:But I would always suggest if you ever have any check engine, check engine lights come on your car, please, please make sure you go get it checked by a reputable mechanic that you trust.
Speaker A:And as long as they give you the code and they tell you what it is, at least you know how to deal with it.
Speaker A:Is it an emergency?
Speaker A:Can I go with it down the road?
Speaker A:Much like you would tell somebody, well, your H Vac, your heat pump's getting up in age.
Speaker A:It's still working, but.
Speaker A:And then you predict it out, it's going to last you maybe five more years because that's the general length that it would based on the age of your unit.
Speaker A:So I would start planning if you're going to plan on living here to be able to either go out and get a home warranty right away that help you or just plan on budgeting money because you're going to have to replace your system.
Speaker A:And that's, you know, when you think about it, replacing an H vac system, depending on the size of house, could be just as expensive as doing a shingle roof replacement.
Speaker C:It's about the third largest investment that a homeowner will make, you know, unless they're replacing the roof or doing a pool.
Speaker C:But as far as an appliance, it's the most expensive appliance that you're going to purchase.
Speaker A:True.
Speaker C:And you know what we like to do.
Speaker C:Our goal is to go out there and check your system out and hopefully give you a clean bill of health.
Speaker C:Clean your condenser coil, have it operate more efficient for you, and then just let you know the overall health of the system.
Speaker C:There are sometimes where we find a very simple component, a very inexpensive component that is failing.
Speaker C:And our trained technicians can tell you, hey, this thing is going out.
Speaker C:It's, you know, hanging on its last thread where you just pay for that small repair and it brings you through the entire summer with no issues.
Speaker C:Now, to your point, when you have a system that's up in age, especially with this new refrigerant change that's happening right now and the cost of the repairs is outweighing the replacement, and it's not making sense to put money into it, then we have the best replacement options than any other company in the valley, as far as I'm concerned, with the highest quality installs.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:So that's very important.
Speaker A:Listen, how do you find that people are.
Speaker A:That are receiving Semper Fi when it comes to.
Speaker A:When you hear about them telling you about some of their issues with their heating and cooling.
Speaker D:You know, the issues.
Speaker D:Anytime we get issues, you know, we're very transparent.
Speaker D:We're not perfect.
Speaker D:We know that when we get something.
Speaker D:Jesse made it very clear, and he's insane, distilled it into all of us, that we're going to make it right.
Speaker D:No matter what it is, we will make it right.
Speaker D:Someone's going to give them a call, someone's going to go down there, someone's going to do their due diligence and make sure that we get it taken care of.
Speaker D:And, you know, just because again, we're not perfect and we do get, you know, here and there, we'll have some issues or it's a user error.
Speaker D:Like, you know, these thermostats are very high tech these days.
Speaker D:And, you know, especially in our senior Community.
Speaker D:You know, we have to make sure that we walk them through everything because that's a lot of the times.
Speaker D:Some of the complaints that we get is that they just don't know how to use it.
Speaker D:And so we're always happy to go down there and give them a re.
Speaker D:Show on how to use, how to use it, because it is, it can be very complicated.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker A:For some of our senior citizens who remember when, you know, life used to be just a Honeywell thermostat, and you just dial it.
Speaker A:What temperature do I want?
Speaker A:Let's put on 72.
Speaker A:Okay, honey, we're okay.
Speaker A:We'll leave it or, and switch it on to heat or cooler or auto.
Speaker A:That's it.
Speaker A:That's all it was.
Speaker A:Now it's like, you know, like, you do you need somebody to actually walk you through it to be able so that you know what you're doing?
Speaker A:I mean, I, I, I've had a good friend of mine who has got some medical challenges, and a lot of times he can't see because he's got some vision problems and he doesn't know.
Speaker A:I remember during the summer he had a problem with his ac.
Speaker A:He says, could you come over here and just make sure it's set right and do everything?
Speaker A:Because he says, I can't do anything with it.
Speaker A:I can't see it.
Speaker A:I don't know what numbers to push.
Speaker A:If I press it in, you know, who knows what could happen?
Speaker D:Some are synced up to your phone, too, where you can control it through your phone.
Speaker D:And, you know, they become very tricky.
Speaker A:Yeah, that's true, that's true.
Speaker A:And you know, again, some, some companies there, you think about the ductwork, the ductwork.
Speaker A:You know, I've seen some pretty ugly ductwork that really need a good cleaning to be able to do that.
Speaker A:Do you guys have that service or is that, do you have a referral?
Speaker A:Refer that out to a reputable company that can actually clean your ducts.
Speaker C:Well, that's kind of what sets us apart from a lot of the other H Vac companies is we're not just there to focus on the functionality of the system itself.
Speaker C:You have to realize that all of the air that that system generates, that customer is paying for.
Speaker C:And even these new homes that are being built, they could be losing up to 30% of that air in their attic.
Speaker C:So they're not even getting it into their home.
Speaker A:Exactly.
Speaker C:And with that leaky duct work, you may be sucking in all that dirt and dust from the attic itself into your ductwork.
Speaker C:Also, if they aren't changing their filter normally, it's going to get coated with dust, which can affect the functionality of the system itself.
Speaker C:So we actually do offer duct cleaning services, duct sealant services, aero seal, which, you know, also qualifies for SRP rebate, also qualifies for a tax rebate.
Speaker C:And we can help you get that stuff taken care of.
Speaker C:Also, once that air is in the home, we want you to be able to maintain temperature without that system having to kick on, kick off and run itself to death.
Speaker C:Because we care so much about the functionality and the efficiency of the system, we're also able to offer you insulation.
Speaker C:We can, we train all our guys how to properly measure insulation, give you that R value or resistance value and make sure that you are up to par so that you do have the most efficient home.
Speaker C:And then once you are able to keep that air in the house, why not have it healthy, clean, purified air, free of contaminants, mold, pollen spores, bacteria, viruses.
Speaker C:All of this stuff we can take care of as well, which people don't realize.
Speaker C:We take care of everything that has to do with heating, ventilation and air conditioning, including duct work, insulation, indoor air quality, new systems, fixing systems, maintaining systems.
Speaker C:We do it all whole home systems.
Speaker A:Sounds like, you know, one of the things that we want to get to after we take a break is get into your, your tune up special.
Speaker A:But that would be, that would be a great, great thing to be able to do.
Speaker A:Get a.
Speaker A:As we like to do with my old friend who is a retired home inspector, we used to do healthy home checks.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's exactly what that is, a healthy home check.
Speaker A:Because there are so many people out there that they're sick and they don't know why they're sick.
Speaker A:And it could be from the materials that your home was built in, could be materials or products that you use in your home.
Speaker A:How many people you know that they got sick from?
Speaker A:Remember the china drywall that they had several years ago and bad carpet, wood floors that they had to recall because there was something with that.
Speaker A:You just never know.
Speaker A:That's why everybody needs a healthy home check.
Speaker A:Besides your body, your home needs a healthy home check too.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:All right, when we come back, we're going to wrap a couple of things up that I want all our listeners to know about.
Speaker A:You know, their Semperfice tune Up special.
Speaker A:And also I just want to touch real quick about mini splits, because a lot of our listeners out there may have parts of their home or additions that mini splits make.
Speaker A:Sense in trying to add a duct onto your system already and it may not be able to handle extra square footage in your home in the addition.
Speaker A:So a mini split makes the best sense and is the most economical.
Speaker A:So we're just going to touch base on that and wrap things up.
Speaker A:But don't go away because you're listening to Boxcar Universe.
Speaker F:Hi, I'm Erica Thompson, the Dominating Designer, a hard working artist with a sense of humor.

Speaker F:The DominatingDesigner hi, I'm Sean with Mr.
Speaker G:Electric and I have a tip to help make your life better.
Speaker G:One important reminder is to call a qualified electrician when you have frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers.
Speaker G:When a circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows, it's indicating that you have a problem with some other part of the circuit.
Speaker G:If your breaker trips more than once, you should have a qualified electrician come out and take a look at it.
Speaker G:Contrary to what may be acceptable, you really shouldn't try to continuously try to reset the breaker because there may be a problem somewhere else down the circuit and you could be causing a fire hazard.
Speaker G:There could be a loose connection or some other form of problem on the circuit and every time you reset the circuit breaker it could be causing a spark at the other end.
Speaker G:We recommend having a qualified electrician come out and check on the condition of the circuit and make sure that the circuit does not have any problems and it could just be a bad breaker also.
Speaker G:But you definitely want to have a qualified electrician check that out.
Speaker G:To have someone come out from our team may only take a portion of a day, but it could potentially save you a lot of money for your life.
Speaker G:And that's just another way Mr.
Speaker G:Electric has the power to make your life better.

Speaker A:All right, we are back and you are listening to Boxcar Universe.
Speaker A:And we are talking heating, cooling and plumbing today with our good friends Bill and Melissa from Semper Fi.
Speaker A:Heating and cooling and plumbing.
Speaker A:And you know, just as a, as a side note to our discussion in the last segment talking about ductwork, I want to let our listeners know about this because sometimes, you know, you have to pay attention to what's going on in your house.
Speaker A:The same gentleman I was just talking about who had the problem with his thermostat, I happened to be over his house doing some work, and I had to go use a restroom.
Speaker A:Well, I went to open the bathroom door and it just, I felt like this cold blast of air, like coming through the door latch because the latch was drilled through the jam.
Speaker A:So it was between the jam and the framing of the doorway.
Speaker A:And it's cold air.
Speaker A:I'm like, there's gotta be something wrong up in the attic.
Speaker A:There's gotta be an air leak in the attic somewhere.
Speaker A:I mean, this was hot outside.
Speaker A:It was over 100 degrees.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:And I get a heat be feeling cold air come down through a jam.
Speaker A:Don't you know, the guy who had gone up there, meaning the company who had gone up there and did an upgrade for him with his air handling unit, must have did a really shabby job putting the ductwork together and connecting everything.
Speaker A:Well, he was basically, the flex duct had a hole in it.
Speaker C:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:And he was cooling the attic and the cold air was circulating obviously everywhere.
Speaker A:And it came down through the jam and the framing, and it came out where the latches.
Speaker A:And so he had somebody come back outside.
Speaker A:Another company came back.
Speaker A:The guy came back from the same company because he called back, I said, you better get your money back.
Speaker A:Because he had been paying exorbitant electric bills for two months until I spotted, I felt this air.
Speaker A:And the guy came back, he says, oh, it's going to take me a couple hours to go ready, reduct this stuff that this guy did.
Speaker A:But don't worry, it's plenty cool up here.
Speaker A:You know, it's good for him.
Speaker C:Yeah, it's not funny.
Speaker C:For paying that bill.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Well, he went back to the company and the company reimbursed him some money back for it.
Speaker A:But again, you know, you got to pay attention to certain things that are not the same.
Speaker A:Much like I Tell everybody all the time, just go around your house, outside, inside, and look for things that are not normal or things.
Speaker A:Things out of the ordinary, then that's what you need to do.
Speaker A:So this way you could spot some of these things.
Speaker A:But touching base about mini splits.
Speaker A:Mini splits are, you know, when they came on the scene, I think that was just such a great way to be able to have heating and cooling in a new addition or a garage space or something like that without worrying having about putting, you know, a five ton unit on top of my garage and I wanted to convert into something now.
Speaker A:But mini splits are based, you know, incomparable to new units.
Speaker A:I mean, they're pretty affordable.
Speaker C:They really are.
Speaker C:I mean, once we get the electrical hooked up, you're basically able to air condition and heat any space that originally was not ducted.
Speaker C:Mini splits have been very, very popular on the east coast already where they have a lot of the older buildings that don't have room to ro flex ducts in the attic like we do.
Speaker C:And they've been popular in Europe for years and years and years and years and years.
Speaker C:There is no more efficient way to heat or cool a space that wasn't originally built with ductwork in the attic or coming up from underneath.
Speaker C:So for man caves, for outdoor sheds, for Arizona rooms, and what we see a lot is, you know, transitioning that garage into an air conditioning space where you could work on that classic car or just get away from the wife for a little while.
Speaker C:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker C:It's a great, great way.
Speaker C:And a very.
Speaker A:I saw that look Melissa gave me.
Speaker A:You better be careful.
Speaker C:It's a very efficient.
Speaker A:You talking about.
Speaker A:Don't get me wrong, they're not married, don't worry about it.
Speaker A:But anyway.
Speaker A:But no, you're absolutely right.
Speaker A:I mean, I know when I had, when I was married, I had built a detached garage.
Speaker A:Half was shop, half was garage for vehicles.
Speaker A:And it was a great way to be able to work on projects because I love to build furniture and do woodworking and a great table I built and it was cabinetry.
Speaker A:I did everything.
Speaker A:Like I said, if I was going to build it, I was going to do it right.
Speaker A:But a mini split was definitely the way to go.
Speaker C:Well, and you bring up a great point.
Speaker C:Let's say you are doing woodwork out there.
Speaker C:Let's say you are working on engines out there.
Speaker C:Some people make the mistake of thinking that they can just add a duct from their existing system and run that into the garage or add a return where it's sucking air in out of the garage.
Speaker C:Well, now you're sucking sawdust.
Speaker C:Now you're sucking exhaust fumes.
Speaker C:I mean, people can get very sick or even worse if you're not doing it the correct way, where a mini split can heat and cool that area without having to worry about bringing any of that air into your living space.
Speaker A:It's true, you know, and, you know, you brought up a very good point.
Speaker A:You know, being a contractor, there are certain things that I've seen over the years that are a pet peeve of mine.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:You know, one being I can't stand when people leave their electric Christmas lights up all year long.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:Drives me nuts.
Speaker A:I mean, these icicle lights that are hanging, and It's July, it's 120 outside, and I'm like, you know, when you live back east, you know, and a week or two after New Year's, you take them down, you put them away, and that's it.
Speaker A:You don't put them back up till maybe after Thanksgiving rolls around again.
Speaker A:But no, they leave it up.
Speaker A:But the.
Speaker A:The other thing that really is a pet peeve, when you think about the H vac units, when somebody wants to do a remodel and they're an older home and they don't have any, you know, height above their ceiling and they run ducks on the roof.
Speaker C:Oh, my God.
Speaker A:To the new areas.
Speaker A:I mean, it looks.
Speaker A:And believe me, I'm right there with you.
Speaker A:See what I mean?
Speaker A:See what I'm saying?
Speaker A:You know what I'm talking about?
Speaker A:And it's like, oh, my God, what were they thinking?
Speaker A:And I understand if they were going to do it and they were going to do a remodel, at least build a parapet wall in front of it so the neighbors don't have to see this monstrosity.
Speaker A:There was a job I was doing over in ScotTSD and they did a remodel next door.
Speaker A:They did exactly that.
Speaker A:They ran the ductworks.
Speaker A:Thank God.
Speaker A:I'll give them one saving grace, at least.
Speaker A:They foamed it.
Speaker A:They foamed it to try and not, you know, cool the entire city of Phoenix, which is amazing that people do.
Speaker A:But some people that do it.
Speaker A:You see this almost looks like a growth coming out of there.
Speaker A:You know, the raked roof of the house that goes in, feeds air into this patio that they decided to enclose, which I'm sure is.
Speaker A:Wasn't permanent.
Speaker C:Well, even when customers have asked us, can you do, you know, run extended external duct work to my enclosed patio?
Speaker C:Now, from the package unit on my roof, it's like, absolutely not.
Speaker C:We are not going to do that and put our name on it.
Speaker A:I'm sorry.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker A:You want to.
Speaker A:You want to do it?
Speaker A:Be my guest.
Speaker C:They'll find someone to take their money.
Speaker C:But, you know, much more.
Speaker C:We can get a ductless mini split in there and do it the right way and get, you know, maybe even an SRP rebate for that as well and have under warranty and not take away from the square footage that your system's supposed to be cooling.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:You know, and I think when people come up and ask me, like, certain things like we're talking about, it's easy just to turn around and say, look, this could be done, but it's not really the proper way.
Speaker A:Or like.
Speaker A:Or I like to say this is Mickey Mouse, because that's exactly what it is.
Speaker A:Think about what happens if you decide to sell your home in five years.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:The resale, it's.
Speaker A:You're not going to get the resale value that you think because this was done improperly.
Speaker A:And it's, you know, in the.
Speaker A:Technically, you're supposed to report it on your spuds report.
Speaker A:I did this.
Speaker A:I did this.
Speaker A:Was it permitted?
Speaker A:Maybe not.
Speaker C:That's the only time that I have no problem telling a customer no is when it's not the right way to do it.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I mean, you know, and all we're doing, we're not trying to be the bad people.
Speaker A:We're just trying to watch out for the homeowner to make sure that they don't, you know, you know, have all these problems down the road with all these entities.
Speaker A:Whether it be, you know, I actually had a.
Speaker A:Several years ago, I had a homeowner call me.
Speaker A:They made them.
Speaker A:They had an unpermitted patio that had to be either brought up to code and get a green sticker permitted and everything.
Speaker A:It's legal to sell or demo it.
Speaker A:And they elected to have me go in and just demo it.
Speaker C:Oh, we see that, too.
Speaker C:Yeah, we've seen it over and over again as well.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:So it's just amazing.
Speaker A: ell us a little bit about the: Speaker C:So you had mentioned it on the first segment about, you know, a lot of people like to do things on their own, but there is a point where you want a professional to do a full inspection on the overall health of your system.
Speaker C:The point of having us come out is to do a preventative maintenance.
Speaker C:And what we mean by that, obviously, in Arizona, it's better to be proactive than reactive.
Speaker C:Most of the time we go out there, your amp draws are good, your refrigerant pressures are good.
Speaker C:We're going to check your temperature differential between what the air is coming in compared to what is going out.
Speaker C:We're going to be able to see if any components are on the verge of failing and preemptively swap those out to avoid a failure.
Speaker C:We'll check your insulation level, your duct work.
Speaker C:We can see how it's running.
Speaker C:And we also clean your condenser coil.
Speaker C:We do a nice light wash on the condenser coil for free.
Speaker C:That's included.
Speaker C:Now, we do all of that for $17.75 for a reason.
Speaker C: her in the marine Corps, that: Speaker C:That would mean something.
Speaker C: And: Speaker C:And so we make sense now.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:And when we started out, we were like, you know, we did it as just kind of a way to get our name out, but now we kind of compare it to, like, the same reason Costco sells hot dogs for a dollar still.
Speaker C:Right.
Speaker C:They may lose money on that.
Speaker A:Yeah, that's right.
Speaker A:Anybody goes to Costco, it's quarter to 12.
Speaker A:I get a cheap lunch.
Speaker A:Yeah, let's go into Costco.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker C:But now it's tradition.
Speaker A:You can't change it.
Speaker C:So that's the exact reason that we do it still for $17.75.
Speaker C:1775, the year our beloved Marine Corps was founded.
Speaker C:And.
Speaker C:And we're standing by it.
Speaker C:And we love going out there and earning new customers.
Speaker C:And a lot of times we go out there and do such a great job that when something does happen, or if you do need us, we're going to be the first call.
Speaker C:And there's plenty of times where we go in there and we show and explain customers why their energy bill's 400, $500 a month.
Speaker C:Offer easy solutions that we can take care of.
Speaker C:Show them that their indoor air quality is 30 times worse than what's outside and how we can fix that.
Speaker C:Tell them why their kids wake up with itchy eyes every morning.
Speaker C:You know, all of these things that we can help them prevent with very easy solutions all in one package.
Speaker A:Yeah, I mean, that's so important to be able to do that.
Speaker A:And I tell people about that.
Speaker A:You know, when we talk to them about solar, don't get focused on one particular fix just because you saw a commercial or heard a radio broadcast or something like that you need a qualified professional to come out and give you a full analysis.
Speaker A:Because like you say heating and air conditioning, air quality, your electric bill.
Speaker A:I mean, I go through and look at electric bills just to get an average to try and figure out how much solar power do you need to cancel out what you're paying, you know, APS or srp.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:But again, much like what the government's doing now, it's time to go back and look, are we spending too much for what we're getting right now?
Speaker A:And then once we figure that out, then how do we lessen it and how can we make it better?
Speaker A:And I think that's the same analogy would be for someone's electric power and the bills they're paying.
Speaker A:Because so many times homeowners go through and they look at the electric bill and they're like, oh no, another bill.
Speaker A:And they put it aside and then all of a sudden, you know, it comes time to pay it, they pay it and it's just out of sight, out of mind.
Speaker A:But they don't want to get involved.
Speaker A:It's easier for them to pay it than worry about fixing it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:And the reality is here in Arizona, we all know that our winters are not extreme.
Speaker C:It gets cold, so you use your heat.
Speaker C:But your energy cost in the, in the winter time frame may be $40 a month, $50 a month.
Speaker C:And then that same system, same home in the summer, you're looking at a 4,500 dollar energy bill, 85% of your bill in the summer here is going to come from that air conditioner.
Speaker A:Oh yeah.
Speaker C:Now the reality is, even if your system is operating efficiently, what if you are losing 30% of that air in your attic?
Speaker C:Why wouldn't you want that sealed and get all the air you paid for?
Speaker C:Or if you do have an older system and it is operating at max amp draw and old, it needs to get swapped out.
Speaker C:So it could be more efficient.
Speaker C:Then we could talk about sealing the ductwork and the insulation and make that 4, $500 bill back down to 170, 180, $200 a month where it's affordable.
Speaker A:That's right.
Speaker A:So guys, how can our listeners contact you and get all that great information?
Speaker D: -: Speaker A:We'll have you back obviously when it gets a little bit warmer because the Heat's coming, it's coming, heat's going to be coming.
Speaker A:And then you guys got to be so busy.
Speaker A:It's, you know, it's H vac 24 7.
Speaker C:You're not kidding.
Speaker A:Yeah, absolutely right.
Speaker A:And, and, and Bill, I want to please pass this along to Jesse and I mean this wholeheartedly.
Speaker A:Thank you for you guys service to our country.
Speaker C:Absolutely.
Speaker A:We really appreciate it.
Speaker A:And you know, hopefully, you know, with the mission that I am trying to get kick started here, hopefully in the this spring we'll be able to join forces and do something and create those container home communities for homeless veterans.
Speaker A:That would be great.
Speaker A:Something I would really, really like to do and, and make a difference because there's just no words that can compare to all our veterans that sacrifice their lives for our freedoms.
Speaker C:I agree with that.
Speaker A:And that just goes such a long way.
Speaker A:And it hits home to not just me and you, but so many Americans.
Speaker A:So I'm glad that they're being treated much better than they were back in the Vietnam era.
Speaker C:You're not kidding.
Speaker C:And speaking of that, that's why we do offer that 20% off for military veterans and their families as well.
Speaker C:And first responders.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:So that's important.
Speaker A:So make sure always use a veteran owned business especially for heating, cooling and plumbing.
Speaker A:Call Semper Fi.
Speaker A:But we want to thank all our listeners for tuning into Boxcar Universe this week.
Speaker A:Remember, we are your home for remodeling and renovation.
Speaker A:We can create your dream home not just from a traditional build, but a container build.
Speaker A:And also when you get that home done, you'd want to jump in the pool so we can get you your very own container home and container home that has a pool and spa all in one unit.
Speaker A:The one great thing about that is you could move it if you could take it with you if you move.
Speaker A:How cool is that?
Speaker A:You don't have to put all your money in the ground, so to speak, and have your house and your property disrupted for three months.
Speaker A:All is a little bit of utility work.
